We contacted Evoc to get one of its Protector backpacks, because they have these removable back protectors that are great for an uplift or downhill session. For some reason the sample that the company sent was the FR Day, which is in the Protector category, but it’s actually a winter sports pack with fittings to attach a pair of skis or a snowboard.

EVOC FR Day Protector hydration pack review

Manufacturer:

Price as reviewed:

£144.99

You can still use it for trail riding, but it’s an odd choice since there are some bike-specific packs in the Protector range, and Evoc also offers regular riding packs like the Stage and CC that we’ve tested previously.

With over 16 litres of internal storage, you can get a ton of gear in the FR Day. There is a massive main compartment with four big sleeves – one of them for the reservoir – a fleece-lined goggle pocket at the top, zipped side pocket and a limpet pocket on the waist belt. There’s very little organisation, so things do rattle around, but with the double Velcro waist belt, the pack doesn’t move too much when you’re riding hard. It is a big pack though, and we could really feel the weight.

This pack doesn’t come with a reservoir, so you will need to build that into the price, but it has a sleeve and all the routing for one, including a zipped compartment to stash the hose to stop it freezing in cold weather.

Even though the Evoc FR Day Protector is excellent quality and offers a ton of protection, we can’t rate it that highly because it’s not really designed for biking. We’re not sure why Evoc sent this pack because the company
has better mtb packs that are definitely worth checking out.
