Four years of going strong. Reader review by Rachel Joseph.
The Bontrager Rhythm Elite shoe is designed for enduro. Low-profile ratchet buckle and full Tachyon rubber lugs. And no one can miss the day-glo lugs.

First impressions of the shoe?
Black shoe with smart carbon sheen and lime coloured sole. Precise fit can be dialled with ratchet style top closure (these can be replaced if damaged) and two Velcro straps for a personalised fit. This is an SPD shoe but I have also used with flat pedals.
How is the fit of the shoe – ie narrow, wide, normal etc?
I have a fairly wide foot and these fit me in my normal shoe size of 41 (UK size 7) provided I wear a cycling sock.
How stiff is the sole?
Stiff sole with carbon footbed help transfer power to the pedal.
What is the retention system (laces, BOA dial etc), and how has it performed thus far?
This shoe uses a ratchet fastening clip for the cuff and two Velcro straps to adjust width. These have worked very well over the four years and I have only needed to replace the ratchet fastening once when I damaged from a fall. These can be purchased as spares from Trek dealers.
How are the shoes off the bike for walking etc?
The shoes work well off the bike and I have used them in cycling ‘adventure cross’ events where there is lots of mud to add to the challenge.
Performance and durability – how long have you had these shoes? Which features are good/bad, and how well have they stood up to use?
I have had these shoes for around four years and replaced the clip fastener on one shoe once, following a minor fall where I bashed the clip. I have been totally satisfied with these shoes for performance on and off road clipped in and flat pedals alike. I particularly like that I could buy spares.
