Carbon midsole/Three-strap closure/BG contoured outsole and footbed/Moulded toe protector/
Stud compatible/Two-bolt clipless configuration/Specialized 0208 391 3500
Squaring up against Shimano’s identically-priced, carbon-soled M225S, the Expert sacrifices the upper ratchet system of this and Specialized’s £140 Pro Carbon shoe, for three Velcro straps. However, it does retain the full-length carbon midsole of this and Specialized’s flagship S-Works shoe. Addressing light weight and pedalling rigidity, the design doesn’t neglect off-the-bike use. The composite has been adapted to provide some clambering toe flex and, combined with an aggressive thermoplastic sole, it’s far from purely a race shoe. Instantly yielding, Body Geometry conventions such as a Metatarsal Button in the forefoot, a Varus Wedge in the outsole and longitudinal arch support helps spread bones and relieves nerves while making efficient use of the performance engineering. The technology is supported by a tough Micromatrix upper offering both mesh-lined breathability and welded panelling to combat trail contact. From the commute to competition, in terms of dabbling in disciplines, the Expert is the definition of carbon clipless versatility.
