This tool came too late for the bunch test last month. It’s identical to the Passport tool but fastened to the side is an emergency derailleur hanger, which bolts to the dropout using the quick-release skewer. It will only work on frames with the hanger on the outside, otherwise the wheel will sit at a wonk. We fitted the hanger to a Giant and were able to get a full range of gears because it sits in the recess left by the original hanger, but on other frames it will sit further outboard, which means you’ll only be able to get five, possibly six, sprockets. This is better than having to strip off the derailleur and convert to singlespeed or worse, walk home.
The emergency hanger is available singularly for £14.99 as are the other 85 different hangers Wheels Manufacturing makes, all of which cost £16.99. If you have a fleet of bikes it’s worth having, but if you have one bike you’re better off buying a direct replacement because if you crash your current one you’ll have to replace it anyway.
