Often overlooked in favour of the nearby Cheviot Hills, Hexhamshire Common is a compact pocket of rolling moorland that is surprisingly full of top-notch mtb’ing. This is ‘Singletrack Central’, and while a lot of it is technically straightforward, it’s sinuous enough to register a huge smile-factor — especially the final fling across King’s Law. But it’s not without some technical interest, particularly the short, steep drops to the burns.
It’s possible to carve a decent loop without straying from the common, but this will be very short and sweet. Better to hop over onto the nearby Knockshield Moor and then savour a full crossing on the return leg.
