..I don't think I have the tool to remove chainset![]()
yes you do need to remove the hole chainset, the rings come off away from the crank arm.
its a simple job, you will need a crank extractor.

remove the alen bolt thats holding the crank onto the B/B then screw in the extractor, next screw the centre part of the extractor in, this will hit the B/B and push the crank off.
once the crank is off take a marker pen and mark each ring so you know which way they go back onto the arm, then un-bolt the 4 alen bolts.
clean everything and put it back together along with your new ring, just make sure the rings go back the way they came off.
last slide the crank back onto the B/B and screw the alen bolt back on, not sure of the exact tourque though.
unless of course its a hollowtech chainset!
is it??
you'll need :

and maybe http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...?ModelID=25631
not totaly sure on the latter tho![]()
Can I ask what middle ring you are intending to use as a replacement? Original Shimano or sthg else?
I was considering one of these...

or even the whole set..

Has anyone ever used them?
Are they as good as they seem?
Are they compatible with XT M770?
Thanks
(O! I think I may have hijacked the post!
Sorry!)

just past half way down the page explains about the rings being compatible with almost any cranks.
Thanks Green.. not sure I totally understand whether they just bolt on to my XT setup or if I need a new spider.
Anyways... they would look great in red on the bike!!!
But then again, i'm looking for the durability rather than bling...
Have you used them?
Ride hard but avoid the hikers
i have,nt but i knew someone who thought they were the dogs bollocks.
im sure they have a really good reputation for being hard wearing and light.
Okay, so once I use the tools to remove the non-drive side arm (crank) how do I get the drive side chain ring spider thingy off the spindle on the other side?! I defo do NOT want to be remiving or need to remove or even touch the BB! Surely? Do I tap the spindle through with a rubber mallet?
