In the last couple of years after a good ride I've developed an annoying cough which lasts for a good couple of hours, sometimes more. At first I thought it might be because of sucking in cold air to my lungs, but I've also had this in the glorious summer months too - so that's that ruled out. I then thought it was perhaps the food, or carb drink which was giving me acid reflux (which I suffer from every now and then) but even rides with no food and just plain - not too cold - water still result in the cough. It's not stopping me riding but is annoying 'er indoors. Any suggestions short of cutting out my throat?

Sounds like it could be Asthma brought on by exercise, can happen even if you don't have Asthma at any other time. I would have a word with the doc like Greeneye said.

I think I suffer from something similar, whenever I do any form of exercise be it running or cycling it seems to bring on an annoying cough even indoors. Have been to the doc and he tested me for asthma and had a chest x-ray but nothing came of either, It doesn't seem to affect my performance so I have just put up with it. Can't keep spending £35 every time I want to go see the doc, I've got bike bits to buy.

I get this occasionally. Usually its at the tail end of a cold but I also have an allergy that gives me asthma like symptoms and makes me cough. Could be that?

You said you get it year round - so it might not be an allergy / pollen reaction. Where do you ride - behind an 18wheeler on the M25? 0r in the countryside? may be worth thinking about external/environmental factors.
But then again I am British and I havent studied medicine

Gonna put blood in spit down to a silly distance road ride I'll stick to enjoying myself off road as opposed to killing myself on it

Don't ignore blood in spit..unless you know that y ou have a bit of simple gum diease or similar.
It'could be the starting sign of something serious.

Oh yes you have to go in style. I wish that was the case but I live in Jersey and nothing is free over here. A simple visit to the doc is £35 and that is before any prescriptions. I noticed you live on the border of Scotland and England. Can you recommend any good trail centers around that area as I have a course coming up in April near Newcastle and it lasts 6 weeks so will bring my bike to keep me occupied at the weekends. (Something for the weekend sir? Nice!!! ) Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi GN. yeah there are plenty depending on how far you are prepared to travel. you have Dalby to the south of you, Keilder slightly North and your within a days travelling distance of the Seven stanes centres in the Borders or north yorkshire. Checkout some of the older threads on the forum for views and some pics. MTB has plenty of glentress stuff so his site is worth a punt but wherever you go you'll have a ball I'm sure. GT
