juicy 5 heartache
      #35151 - 29/06/2009 16:02

Help please,i took delivery of a new bike a couple of months ago.my problem is the rear brake(avid juicy 5)i,ve tried all sorts to eliminate the honking that it is doing.under heavy braking it starts honking like a constipated goose.i,ve tried filing down the leading pad edges, emerying the rotor edges, new pads, swapping rotors front to back.new rotor, making sure pads are correctly aligned, copper slip behind pads, different wheel.I,m starting to see my arse now.Any further advise would be greatly appriciated, before i do something drastic and buy some new brakes.

hi fazzy, have you tried centreing the caliper on the disc? Loosen the bolts that will all movement in the same plane as the axle. Pull your brake hard whilst holding the break lever tighten the bolts back up. That might help. It mght not.

If it makes you feel any better mine make a horrendous noise in the wet!

Surely it's cheaper to just get some earplugs if you can't ignore it?!

Not sure about the copper grease behind the pads. when it heats up and becomes super slick it has the potential to contaminate your pads, plus it's a crap magnet. The tension spring isn't contacting the rotor (not sure it would howl though but worth a try)?

To centre the rotor you pump the brake with the CPS bolts loosened to set the pistons, then release the lever and set the caliper so the rotor is central between the pads, then tighten the bolts..
The reasons for this are long winded, and I'll just say that I was trained by a Santa Cruz Syndicate mechanic and they have to get them right. ( they also use a better bleeding technique) Trust me, it works and it's quicker to type.
2 reasons for noisy brakes are contamination and low temps during bed in. A quick solution can be to dab some Swarfega on the pads and rub them together to clean off the glazing from low temp use, and the oap drives out any oily residue.
Clean rotor with isopropyl alchohol, and test on the biggest hill you can find and get the brake hot as you can.
If it's still noisy, get new pads, clean rotor, and try again. If it's still noisy, get rid of your Trek.

No - wife was out last night, so I was in playing Mafia Wars on Facebook! I don't like/feel like going to the pubs on the High Street. Landlord at The Bull only speaks to his regulars. Bell and Shears never looks attractive. The George - no opinion. My wife like the Cricketers on the common. Chef from London trying to set up for himself..

Good Indian restaurant on High Street though!!

are the Greek restaurants still around - The Parthenon in Adelaide St and Anastasia in St Peter's St? Used to take Greek students there when I worked with the college used to be called Oaklands....

Don't know - I am actually in a village outside of St Albans - on Watling Street.

I like Greek food, but it is not something I generally go looking for if I want to go out in the evening.
