Something of a Common-hopping affair, this deceptively tough Hampshire and West Sussex hack spends much of its duration under mixed woodland cover, with very little tarmac action in-between.
Thankfully though you’re never all that far from public house civilisation. Picking through the sandy gullies of Chapel Common, entering Forest Mere you’ll discover a criss-crossing of inviting trails as the Killer pushes on to the fringes of Longmoor Army camp, its sandy mounds scarred with the remains of short-course downhills of old. Ripping through the heather to double back through Liphook and breach Stanley Common, the Sussex Border Path takes you to Kingsley Green, unearthing a few millionaire hideaways along the way. The plummet into Kingsley Green clearly comes at a price. A steep honk up the other side carries the route on to Black Down’s 280-metre summit above Haslemere: site of a mysteriously downed Iberia airlines jet that claimed 37 lives back in the late Sixties. Although short-lived, the descent back down to Cotchet Farm is a gorse-carving ripper. Once a little height’s regained through Kingsley Green and Marley Common, the route runs largely parallel to the opening stint, on wooded trails interspersed with minor road back to Chapel Common.
