The last time we saw Claudio Calouri he was nervously picking his way down the blood-red slopes of Utah. He may have sounded terrified but he won universal respect for even attempting the ferocious course.

His latest preview could not be more different. In this one he takes on the Red Bull Velodux, a cyclocross race that winds through a medieval castle in Estavayer-de-Lac, France.

It’s very strange to see Claudio on skinny tyres and he himself describes them as feeling like sausages. The narrower bars of a cyclocross bike do come in useful for him though as the course takes riders through some narrow doorways.

Claudio is able to show off his downhill skills as he bunny hops over obstacles, crashes down staircases and picks the quickest lines through certain sections. He does get beaten pretty easily on some of the climbs though…

The course starts in a field then up a long staircase to the Castle of Estavayer-le-Lac. It winds through narrow passages in the castle wall, then on the cobbles of the old town, with some mountain bike style features. The toughest test part of the course were the 104 steps down to the flat finish.

This was the second running of the Red Bull Velodux and due to a lack of rainfall the course was specially watered to make it more difficult. The race was won by Partner Carstensen Fini of Denmark.
