Utilising the expertise of evergreen XC legend turned ultra-endurance specialist David ‘Tinker’ Juarez, the barnet-themed Dred Tread is one of five signature knobblies from Kenda. If anyone deserves his own tyre it’s ‘Tinky’, with a place in both BMX and MTB Halls of Fame thanks to a career spanning almost 25 years.
The XC influence is clear in the Dred, based around a fairly traditional arrangement of square knobs. A low-profile backbone is enhanced with the addition of a central strip of minimal cylindrical knobs — to punch through the soft pumice on the likes of a relentless Big Bear ascent — and backed up by split-square central knobbles.
Snapping effortlessly to a Bontrager wheelset and inflating even without goo application, air pressure was maintained and the whole experience was much less fraught that we’ve come to expect with a tubeless set-up. If you’re considering the conversion this could be just the ticket.
