Tested: Berghaus Paclite jacket £150

With its ripstop Gore-Tex fabric, stormflaps and rollaway hood, the Berghaus Paclite jacket looks a little dated when compared to many of the snowboard-inspired competition, but it’s a classic design that has existed in Berghaus’s range for many years. Although not a specific cycling jacket, the Paclite does a good job as a crossover garment, offering plenty of room in the sleeves, and the back doesn’t ride up too high once you’re stretched out on the bike. The rollaway hood makes a lot of sense for mountain biking, where it can be stashed away most of the time, but pressed into action should you have a mechanical on the trail or while packing the bike into the car at the end of a ride. An added bonus is the high, fleece-lined collar that keeps your neck warm and cosy whether the hood is up or down. While we found the Paclite did a great job of keeping us dry, we felt breathability could be improved with a pair of pit-zips. And although the zip pockets proved very useful, the hook and loop stormflaps made accessing their contents awkward.
