Easton engineers found that locking down the top of the faceplate of the EA70 stem before tightening the bottom bolts offers better load transfer and minimises actual loading on the bolts. If this (Top Lock) technology looks familiar, that’s because it’s exactly how the split clamp on an Avid brake lever works.
As the name suggests, the new EA70 is 3D forged from EA70 proprietary aluminium. The DST (distributed stress technology) faceplate is designed for use with lightweight handlebars and distributes stress more evenly along the handlebar. Opposing bolts on the steerer clamp offer greater knee clearance.
This stem is exceptional quality for the money, a good weight and as stiff as any of the lightweight trail stems we have tested. Our only gripe is the shorter 70mm version is only available in a 20-degree rise, which is far too upright on a trail bike, especially one with a tall front end and/or long fork. If Easton addressed this, we’d be giving this stem a 10.
