The Public Forest Estate is public property and looked after by the Forestry Commission. It is 258,000ha altogether, about the size of Dorset, and made up of over 1,500 different woods and forests across most parts of England. More than half the population lives within 6 miles of a Forestry Commission wood.

The Forestry Commission has had nearly 500 responses to the consultation already and is looking forward to receiving more before the consultation closes. It is available from http://www.forestry.gov.uk/england-estatestudy or local offices.

A shorter questionnaire aimed at visitors to Forestry Commission woodlands is also available at http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/PFEQuestionnaire.pdf/$FILE/PFEQuestionnaire.pdf and local Forestry Commission offices.
