i have thought about the SLX when i was in the shop to day, i had a look at both of them its a hard choice. my mind could be change if i knew some weights ?
Deore are a little flimsy for a big bloke.
slx are budget bombproof, they have replaced hone and lx. Not as light as xt but great value.
Xt are lighterweight but not as sturdy.
Slb will tell you about xt not being quite so sturdy.
Have a look on the shimano webby the weight info and stats are all there.

Thought that was XTR that SLB mullered??
Anyway, 105 hollowtech 2 is road specific, don't know if it would fit, never felt the need to try it TBH, but the dimensions regarding the BB will be the same, not sure about the axle though. Then there's the seals to consider.
Maybe it was.. i thought it was just xt though. I'm sure that he'll chip in and confirm. Assuming he can get over the agony of reliving it.
