If i have sram rear mech, do i need sram cassette.

Just getting a sram xo rear mech and shifter priced up in local bike shop and he started saying that i would need sram cassette and chain as sram and shimano arent compatable.

Plus he said he wouldnt swap out my shimano xt stuff for the sram xo as its inferior.

Advice required before i buy anything, many thanks.

im pretty sure sram and shimano stuff isnt compatible......i think having shimano front mechs is ok with sram is ok, but all the other bits are paired with sram to sram.....i could be wrong so id wait for a more knowledgeable response

I have ran X9 rear mech, SRAM 971 chain on an XT cassette with no probs

front mech was XT and both shifters were X9

But like you said, we need the oracle to clarify

shifters and mech have to match on brand.

I think that's right for the rear mech but not for the front as SRAM didn't used to do a front mech

chains - you can pick whichever you think will give you the best life/cleanest shifting. I use shimano chain and sram powerlink. you can mix it up there. i think you can also change the cassette to sram without issue if you have other parts as shimano. it is purely the amount of cable that the shifter pulls to move the rear mech on to the next cog is different - actuation ratios - so the shifter and mech on the rear need to match up.

you'll be fine and i dunno how he could say that x0 is inferior to xt, because most companys use x0 after xtr.
