Just ride it, what's the worst that can happen?
I've long since stopped caring about footpaths, rights of way etc.
Whereabouts is it and what is it designated as?
Must admit I agree with SLB. I go to twat around up at Penshaw Monument every now and then. Not meant to ride there as it is National Trust property but it's 5 minutes away and is good to session so why not.
It's part of the Pennine way going from low force to high force and on to cow green reservoir.

Now that would be a challenge. There'd be lots of walkers round that area so you'd get a LOT of grief for riding it.
maybe we do a ride following a camping session where we take monday off work so there will be less walkers

as above, I dont tend to worry about foot paths, just be overly pleasant to everyone and it makes it difficult for them to be rude back.
having said that. loads of walkers will still slow you down and reduce the enjoyment
