I've just purchased a 50mm stem as I want to go a bit shorter. Previous stem 65mm. I was also considering buying a wider bar. The bar I have now is 711mm. I am 5ft 9in would a 740/760 bar be too wide for me?

Widge, can you not adjust your grips on your current bars so that you can at least see how a wider bar would feel stationary. Granted it is not a full test but would at least allow you to verify reach
It's the Renthal duo stem I've just bought. I have ODI lock on grips so I suppose they could be moved out but really would need to test on a trail.

It's a nice stem, isn't it!? I'm off to Llandegla tomorrow to give it a proper try out.
I suppose if you bought some wider bars and they proved a bit wide you could cut them down a bit? What bars have you been looking at, btw?

Looking at some Nukeproof warheads. They are 760mm wide which would give me an extra inch each side.

would that not have the same effect as a slightly longer stem though? Not a geometry expert but dependijng on how short your stem was to begin with you could end up back in a similar position

Get them mate, won't do any harm and they have markings on if you do feel the need to chop them down. I have the 800mm Nukeproof Warhead bars which are a bit too much so they'll be getting cut down to 780mm when I pull my finger out.
