Hi ppl,
Im going camping in Hawkshead at the back end of august with a few mates. They aren't big into biking, but i've managed to drag one of them along with me.
Just wondering if anyone knows of any short (2-3 hours) rides out of and around hawkshead? I know there should be plenty of trails so is it worth just getting my map out and picking one?
Thanks in advance
Chris

Also the Kings Arms in Hawkshead is, in my opinion, the best pub to go to for a few beers.

And there is (or was) a coffee shop that does the best (and biggest) cheese burger in the known universe.

Thanks for the quick response, grizedale is an option but for a quick ride was going to see if there was anything closer. would be a waste to not go that bit sooner and get myself to grizedale.
oh and re the kings arms. will be going there for a few too many. its a yearly ritual. as is the biggest not only burgers but breakfast buns too in the cafe to sobar us up.
Thanks again!

Anything closer than Grizedale?????
It's on the door step!
We rode the trail from Hawkshead about 3 weeks ago, you can join it at the top of the hill by the bus stop on top of Hawkshead Moor, less than 2 miles. How much closer do you want??

Hi 1878
If that's a date of birth, that makes you 131 ish
Way to go old dude
The North Face trail at Grizedale is great for newbies and seasoned rider alike. Simple to follow trail, lots of fire road if the NFT is too much. as SirQ said it is real close to Hawkshead.
either head north out of hawkshead and then left to coniston and go into the trails via high cross car park or head south out of hawkshead turning right at the T junction and after a few hundred yards turn tight right up a windy road nex to some houses. you can then park at moor top carpark for free at the top on the right hand side, this is right on the NFT or carry on down the other side and park at the visitor centre carpark. £4.00 and the bu66ers take credit cards in the machine
took my lad there a couple of weeks ago and promised him a coffee and a bacon roll at the end of the ride.
guess how much for 2x bacon roll, 1x tea and 1x coffee
£11.80
yes eleven fcuking pounds 80 ba5tard pence
take a packed lunch

We need to stop paying these STUPID prices!
The only way to spot this blatant thieving is to PUT THE BA574RDS OUT OF BUISENESS!

These guy's are providing a nice service but they are getting ideas way beyond themselves with these delussions of grandeur!
They will say it's because they occupy an envious position and that the infrastructure costs a fortune.
I say blatant profiteering by the shortsighted accountants, they take a relatively in expensive day out (once you've splurged thousands on bikes and kit) and turn it into a p155 take!
Another reason why the honesty of the Marin amd Penmacno appeal to me

you can get straight into grizedale forest from a bridleway that runs up out of the top of hawkshead.Go through the little allyways wher the shops and pubs are on the lane till it peters out then turns to bridleway,(hard climb)just the job for warming legs up.this leads onto grizedale forest fireroad.up this a short stretch then you can join northface trail waymarked with reddy orange waymaked signs on left, from here,do the route then fly down the way you came up.Don,t overlook the natural trails in grizedale though some cracking trails. Also some quality riding to be had out from otherside of hawkshead around claife hieghts.

Thankyou very much for all the advice. My mates have let me down for the biking before we go for the camping weekend so debating wether to still go myself. Not ideal from a social or safety point of view but I still think its a waste of a trip up to hawkshead, as its about an hour drive. Very tempted after reading your reviews on it, except tango, I'l pop a flask and a sarny in the car I think.

?????
Do I read this right? Hawkshead is an hour's drive away, which is much too far, and you are scared of being out on your own?
