Loose Weight - Get Fitter
      #54483 - 11/02/2010 10:15

I love going on my bike, not as often as I would like to though, since I gave up footy 10months ago, I have put on a 'few' pounds. Any idea on how I can loose this extra baggage. I even bought a cross trainer which I use 3 - 4 times a week for about 20 - 30mins. I eat a lot less (no biscuits, chocies etc.) I have stopped bringing sarnies to work, instead I have special K for breakfast, about 5 bananas through the day, and whatever the missus cooks for tea (if she feels like it). Am I going the right way to loose weight, because I have to admit my energy levels are really low. Any ideas please! I am trying to get back on my bike (Bit difficult with three kids) but I have to do something!!!!!!!

give up booze, start eating more (you're fasting all day at work, not good) and start riding to work.
Not eating properly during the day will just make you feel knackered and slow your metabolism down, stopping you losing weight.
There's a lot to be said for the old addage, breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper.

I hae to agree with aAndy here.. i used to skip breakfast and didn't realise until later on that I didn't wake until after lunch...
When i actually changed and started eating breakfast, all other meals were about eh same size as previously i los 1/2st. by not eating much you make you body go into famine mode, it sotres all the energy you consume and tries to keep things running as slowly as possible.

Get a healthy bowl of museli or something else slow releae (not a mini bowl but a decent portion) eat a proper lunch and a light evening meal.. you'' probably find that if you're intaake of calories is the same you'll still start shedding a little weight. The fruit in the day is good but maybe not needed as much if you are eating properly...

Riding to work will just knock the weight off you after the initial hurt of getting your fitness up... I've lost he best part of 1.5 - 2st since I started riding a couple of miles each way each day.

Hi, thanks for the advice, so I should eat properly thro the day to keep my metabolism up? It's a bit difficulr to ride to work (30miles) each way.
Might have a go in the summer (but I would smell a bit then tho.. Ha Ha.
Is getting on the cross trainer a good thing for 30mins or would I be better off going on my bike for an hour or so???

Thanks for the advice, the only bit that hurt was the bit about giving up boozee!!!!!

Do you have a gym near work? I use my hour break to go to spinning classes. I don't need to lose weight, but when the instructors turn it up I always lose a few pounds. It's good bike work, and the fitness - my resting heart rate is down to 34 now - so I am pretty chuffed.

I also forgot to mention that you shouldn't get too hung up on weight loss, if you focus more on gradually getting your fitness up, you will find that your body will start shedding some of the excess baggage....

30miles is probably a bit far for starting but hey there may be ways you can get there with a portion of your travel on your bike. Can you ride a couple of miles to a train station then a couple of miles at the other end? Even if it takes you a little longer weigh it up against the time you'd spend at a gym session. Doing a little everday rather than it all at the weekend with raise your general activity levels and boost you metabolism a little more that saving it all for a blast on the weekend. It will also make the weekend blast most enjoyable as you will not need so much recovery.

Also just to set you a target, my riding buddy (who is stupidly fit, like a two wheeled terminator) does 25miles(possibly more) on his single speed each way about 3 times a week, sometimes more if he's no squash or badminton lined up!! Just put it there to say that you nice road bike could do 30m each way if you really wanted to... It's not totally neccesary to bit 'fit' but if you set yourself a target of something similar you'd have a goal to work too which I hope would spur you on. Don't kill yourself trying though, build up to something like that.

Its a case of finding a balance between what you eat and how you exercise and remember exercise is not just riding a bike., it could be you do a lot of walking in your job or lifting that also counts as exercise.

As mentioned if you don't eat enough your body starts storing everything you eat, so you have no energy and not losing weight. To much exercise\training can produce muscle which in turn is heavier than fat.

I would suggest that if you really want to lose weight then either join a gym or go to a slimming group to help with your weight loss. I spent ages trying and failing on my own.

Currently lost 3 stone and still a long way to go.

If you are referring to my 17.5st target by the time I meet you all at Gisburn, then I have lost 4lb (which includes a major weight gain a couple of weeks ago) but I am still on target, you can keep an eye on me here

As an overall weight loss target I don't have one yet, I know I need to get down to about 12st, but I will worry about the exact target when I get a little closer

Thanks, makes everything a lot clearer, more excercise, rather than starve myself, I might try biking some of the way to work, I'll have a look for somewhere I can leave my car about half way or so.... to start off with.

Good Luck xendistar, keep it up, I will have to use you as my inspiration

Sounds like you have a plan forming..... Stick with when you set yourself a target, try to make it achievable but not too easy. As xendi has said, you will get ups and downs but don't worry too much as long as you weight is generally heading in the tight direction. Even when you do start controlling your diet more, you are normally better changing the foods you eat rather than the amount. Although as i dont know your diet I may be quite wrong in your case.

driving part way really makes sense. If you work in a town, it means you get free parking in the suburbs and you get to cycle past all the people sat in traffic jams once it gets built up. A lot of the guys in MBR towers do something similar.

Hey Homer, have a read of this guy

Massive MTBer

He was 22st+ and started to cycle to work, at the start he drove half way and then cycled the remainder to work a couple of days a week and then slow increased from there. On a good week now he is hitting 100 miles riding to and from work.

Just take it steady at your own pace and most of all enjoy yourself.

I lost 3 stone and have kept it off, thereabouts! by cycling more than running, although I probably did lose more when I did running and cycling. I also combined the training with a simple eating plan - protein or carb only meals and NEVER mix the two...went from 16.1 to under 12 at my best...the carb meals for lunch help the evening training go well.

I used to weigh 24.5 st. I dropped right down to 14.5 st but over the next few years (thanks largely to some heavy drinking) I've gone back up to my current weight of just under 18st, so I'm back on the weight loss regime again. Like the other guys have said, the best way to lose weight is to focus more on the exercise than the eating (although you need to keep an eye on that too). I started off with just walking and gradually built up. I'd always enjoyed mountain biking but my weight had meant that I didn't do much so I started to incorporate as much cycling into my week as possible and now I try and find an hour each day for some form of exercise. The key in terms of exercise is finding something that you enjoy and doing that (although variety helps too) as its really hard to motivate yourself to do something that you hate. As for food, I found that calorie counting really helped (even though it was a pain at first) as it's often surprising how many calories some things contain. Good luck with your goals, sounds like you're making good progress.

I knew this guy who would run 20 miles a day for a week.
Trouble was...

...He ended up 140 miles from home!
