Needs some advice. The chain on my bike has worn to the 1mm mark on the park tools chain tool. The bike was fitted with a XTR Durace chain which as we all know are expensive. I bought Shimano HG53 from Rutlands on special for 9.99! The weight is about the same. Whats the technical difference and which chains last longer. All my riding recently is in thick mud, hence the wear is always going to be accelerated.

I have a similar problem. I ran with the pg991 for a while. Good chain, but tended to break. I had to repair it three times.
Technically, the chains are a little thinner, but they are coated with nicle (I think), so that they run smoother.
But you have hit the nail on the head with the problem. It is muddy at this time of year and if you are riding in winter, then a nice chain is not going to last. They are great for racing or summer rides, but this time of year you want something slightly less spec, because you are just going to ruin it.

This is a good question, which IMHO, validates a bit more feedback.... I use an XTR chain, believing they are the best...but are they "a lot of money" better than the cheaper chain? I have also used XT, and to be honest, have seen no noticeable difference. I run XT drive with XTR mechs.

My experience seems to show that the cheaper chains seem to wear out quicker, and rust more easily.
Over the years, I have ended up settling on XT chains only. I found that the cheaper chains seemed to turn into one big rusty mess very quickly if I wasn't totally on top of the maintainance, even more so at this time of year with lots of wet and muddy rides.
I have never justified the expense of an XTR chain, but usually manage to find XT chains for well under £20.
Also, as a slight aside, I have seen quite a few broken chains over the years, on friends bikes, and on the bikes of people I have met on the trail. The one thing they all had in common is that they have all been SRAM chains that have broken. However, I'm sure other people here will tell me that their experience is the exact opposite.
