Newbie needs Help
      #4705 - 21/07/2008 22:05

Hi all,

I recently bought a Mongoose Super Tyax, I've had a few little issues. The first is the reach adjustmuent screw on the front brake lever, which keeps unscrewing through vibration. Is this a common problem or is it just me?

Secondly, the rear brake makes the most horrific vibration sort of noise. Similar to that of old canti levers when they got wet - back in the day. Ive had the bike about 6 weeks and done around 220K on it, could this noise be due to the pads not being bedded in properly? Or is it likely that the disc has come out of the box slightly warped?!

Any help gratefully received, Cheers in advance.

Andy

Hey Andy Welcome

Nice new steed mate!

With regards to the reach adjustment screw, I would take it back to the shop! If the rear doesn't come undone that easy then why should the front? You would buy a car brand new then have the brake pedal keep falling off! Its obviously faulty mate!

The rear squeal, I would say you may have not bedded them in properly and they may not get better with time, What make are they? I have Magura and thay had organic pads from new which have to be bedded in hard or else they wear out quickly! I used get lots of problems with squeaky brakes (I reckon lots of people do to) BUT I recently fitted some Goodrich pads are they don't make a sound and are twice as powerful as the Magura and a set of EBC pads that I had once were!

Check the Brake manufacturers web site and see if you can find anything of help with regards to bedding in procedures? Otherwise try removing them and lightly roughing up the friction surface then refit them and bed them in again.

Hope this helps

Cheers for the advice Prophet. I think the chances are the pads may be screwed, I descended a fairly steep road in cornwall on holiday a few weeks ago and trailed the back brake most of the way down, needless to say the got fairly hot and have possibly glazed.

Thanks for the advice.

Andy

Andy,

If you don't get any luck from your bike shop on the loose reach adjustment screw then get yourself to B&Q or Halfords and get some Locktite 'Lock 'n' Seal. It'll only cost a couple of quid and is worth it. It's custom made for what you are after

It'll stop all your bolts vibrating loose and, unlike a normal glue, is easily undone with whatever tool is supposed to be used on that part.
