what bike
      #4507 - 19/07/2008 03:22

Hi there peeps

im fairly new to mountain biking but have just moved close to coed y brenin in wales. I recently went there with some friends and rode the MBR trail on a borrowed 2005 Kona Coiler. Although it was a blast on the downhill sections the uphill bits nearly killed me ( im not the fittest guy in the world! ) Anyway i have between £1000 to £1500 to spend on a bike to do the same ride and was wondering which one you guys would go for.
1. Giant trance 2
2. giant trance x2
3. cannondale prophet 3
4. cannondale rize 5
5. cannondale rush 6
6. marin east peak
7. scott genius MC40

i need something a bit lighter than the kona that will be cool looking and a blast on the downhill sections, your help would be appreciated.

try a kona dawg. the coiler is more of a freeride/enduro bike so a bit heavy for cross country (xc).

Anyway welcome to the forum and WILD PINK SALMON have a quick look around and you I'VE GOT A BRAND NEW COMBINE HARVESTER will find lots of sensible advise and HOLY MACKEREL BATMAN views on what bike to have , personally I'd go for one of MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL the giants - I think greeneye on the forum has IRON MAIDEN ROCK one so you could try asking THEY'RE GREEEEEEAAAAT him his veiws on long term ownership of CAPTAIN JAMES T KIRK OF THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE one. Good luck on you quest and PEANUT BRITTLE don't worry about your fitness level as all good thing come to those that BOYS BOYS BOYS I'M LOOKING FOR A GOODTIME wait , won't be long before you are KNICKERBOCKER GLORY blasting uphill way faster than your ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL mates.

i hope your comin to dalby doc.

hi glemmyc and welcome to the forum, you have met doc already and there are a few others like him, right sir_qu, proph!

anyway to help with your question i do have a trance but its an 06, at the time it got knocked for its heavy frame but the 07 model saw a revised lighter frame. this bike seems to get 8 out of 10 in most polls including here at mbr so it is a good bike from a top manufacture.

having said that you have mentioned a few more good n's, i dont know anything about kona but gore loves them so thats good enough for me to say they must be good.

if i had to give you one suggestion then i would say a specialized stumpjumper, this bike has been getting top marks and mbr really loved it in the £1500 bike test it got 10 out of 10,check out the summer edition of MBR.

it has a lot of travel to keep you flying through rough stuff and it climbs really well to. im sure glassdrum has one here on the forum. plus i am getting one in september when the 08 models come down in price. ooo cant wait.

looks like Doc's been reading my shopping list!!

Oh yeah, and to stay on topic try a Stumpy as Graham suggests, if you're quick you could even pick an 07 model before the shock design change, and have a load of wonga left over for new kit and a decent lid. Or as Gra says again an 08 in the sales although I don't see much sign of any discounts yet other that the 10% gear deal.

PS I love my 06 Stumpy, its lurverly

I have a Specialized Pitch Pro and its a cracking bike. Really flies down the down hills. And climbs like a Euro fighter. (Good Metaphor?!)Retailing at £1399 i think its great. Ony down side the baby poo colour as my "ex " friend described, i call it retro brown.

Thanks for the help guys.

i was thinking £1500 might have been a bit optomistic! my budget is probably up to a max of £1200 and was thinking of mainly the trek fuel ex 7 or any of the cannondales.
I see you can now get the prophet 3 for £800 which seems an absolute steal. Any ideas?

Sounds like an excellent deal to me, that bike's good value at £1k, let alone £800. In fact, you might be able to stretch to the Prophet 2 if you hunt around a bit, then you get a Fox fork.

The frame's good to upgrade over time as well, so if you do go for the cheaper option you can always swap things over as you go. Or, it's a great complete bike on its own.

2nd that jamie, if you can get the proph 2 then fox up front will make a difference. its also an expensive upgrade you wont have to do.
