Newbie needing some advice.
      #4497 - 18/07/2008 21:56

I know you have been asked this question a thousand times before but after having a search around on the forum not all the questions and answers really give me an ideal answer if you know what i mean lol.
What bikes are best for my needs with a budget of £1000 ? At present i have a trek 4300 that has been well used over the 4 years i have had it. I now intend on taking up this wonderfull sport/hobby more seriously and venture around the country to trail centres and well known routes i.e exmore, dartmore, wales etc.
Now, my first question is would it be best to go hardtail or full sus considering my budget?
Also i see that alot of hardtails are race bikes like the scott scales, cube ltd's, gt etc. Would these be any good?
I have only really been looking at hardtails at the moment and have a small list but nothing definate:

Cube Ltd race/team
Spesh Rockhopper pro
Marin Eldridge
Merlin Malt 4
Commencal supernormal

All the help you can give me would be very much appreciated and many thanks in advance

Hey evo3ben

My money would only go on a Full Susp, If I already owned a Full Susp and just wanted a bike as I had some money burning a hole in my 'sky rocket' then yes I would probably buy another hard tail!

Q: Have you ever ridden a Full Suss? If not then get a demo on one or if you know a mate with one ask for a quick go! and I am sure you will be truly converted! Seriously Full Suss, All Day Every Day!!!!!

There are loads of deals out there and more coming soon as the 2009 bikes are released!

For that kind of money you can get a very decent full sus. There are 2007 models on Wiggle with 35% off. They have a lot of Kona on with 40% off at the moment.
The best piece of advice usually comes from Sir Q although Prophet has said it in as many words - test ride!!

you missed me out of the best advice list there steve.

hi evo, for £1000 you will get dam good hardtail as a good chunk of your budget goes on the frame. however the ride will never be as good as a full susser.

£1000 will get you a good a bouncer, try and hold out till the 2008 bikes come down then buy, it will be worth the wait.

full susser every single time.

With a grand to blow my advice would be defeinitely go full suss, there are some great deals around .

In my early days I rode a rock solid rock hopper - great for the soft muddy trail around Bath where I livee. % years living in Yorkshire soon showed up the bikes shortc oming though and I bought a GT full susser, this was in 96, early days for suspension but the bike just transformed thewhole MTB experience as far as I was concerned.

These days I have my FSR which was a quanum leap in tems of spec, I'm sure I only use one tenth of its capabilities but I just love it. For mtb centres and rocky routes full suss keeps you on the track and the trade off on pedalling efficiency is minimal these days.

I recently borrowed a hidh spec hard-tail for a bit of forest trail work and although it did whizz up the hills I did miss the plush feel of my bike on the downs and rolling single track.

Happy hunting and I hope you find the bike you want!

Steve you flatter me (which is nice!)

Proph's already said it... test ride!

I think we're getting into the time of year where the manufacturers start pushing next years models on test days, just got back from CyB and there was a Kona test day, thought of you Gore! All those shiny Kona's, I'm sure they wouldn't have missed one!!

Check the mags for the test ride days...

Anyway a grand'll get you a decent bouncer and even Llandegla had some great deals on Commencal's and Kona's again.

So if you can stretch to a bouncer go for it, you won't regret it. That's not to say a HT ain't brilliant and you'll be thrilled (I've a soft spot for Cube bikes myself but the Doc gave me some cream) but as you'r in good FS hunting teritory then see what's around.

Let us know what you decide...

Or post some more thought's about what type of FS you'd like

Thanks very much for you replies!! After reading what you guys say and from what i have read around the forum i am going to look for a full sus bike.

I will be going for a test ride at my local centre (Grafham Water) to make sure im making the def correct choice. It will also be a bike in my price range obviously so can see and feel what i will get for my money.

I am at the moment swayed towards the Commencal meta 4.2 as has had good reviews and seesm to be really liked. What i want to try and stay away from is the more race type of bike like the Cube AMS Pro etc even though they are extememly good looking likes and really well spec'd for you money but not sure they would be too great going up Snowdon or around a hard black route.

Trek and Spesh seem to have good bikes for under £1000 as well.

Will hopefully test ride a bike this week and will let you know how i get on

Thought i would let you all know i have brought my new bike.
I had a few test rides and really loved the Orange P7s so after a good hunt around and a bit of haggling i managed to get an Orange P7 pro in white for a brilliant price of £1000! Cant wait for it to arrive. Should be here by the end of the week.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.
