Carpel Tunnel syndrome
      #4463 - 18/07/2008 16:12

Hi everyone, does anyone have any experience of carpel tunnel syndrome? My girlfriend has been diagnosed with it after developing painful wrists since taking up mountain biking 8 months ago.
She has been using my old hardtail which is probably adding to the problem ie. forks too stiff, grips too thick, stem too long, frame too stiff etc. Taking her round places like Dalby red trail probably hasn't helped either!
She has seen a doctor and a physio who recommend wearing wrist splints but she says they hurt her wrists. She's avoiding mountainbiking at the moment as its too painful and can only do short town rides.
Any suggestions would be appreciated cos we're not sure where to go from here.

I have just got a Powerball from Amazon - amazing device!! A gyroscope that puts about 10kg of force through your forearms when working at maximum speed. Gives a rally strong workout to the forearms and wrists. Used a bit more gently these are meant to be really good for recovery from RSI/Carpel Tunnel.

That’s a bit harsh TF90!!

With it being a nerve issue there isn’t a lot you can do however If you get some ibuprofen gel and put in onto the hand, wrist and bottom half of the arm about 30 mins before riding this will help with the pain until it settles down or fixes it’s self. As for the bike the fellas are better of answering that one!!! I’m still learning!!!!

Oh and welcome to the nut house

CTS after 8 months seems quite quick but I ain't a doc, so wouldn't really know.
My experience is from motorcycling, vibration/holding the grips too tight etc, have you tried just a nice gentle poodle around on the flat with nothing to make her grip too hard. Also you could try changing the grips to either thinner ones or women specific ergonomic ones for around £20.

Good luck and welcome!

Ditto on the outright swearing too, we all do it but it's the first time I've seen it not thinly disguised.

The true test of funniness is in the way that you disguise it - now that makes an impact, just ask Gore.

Well hello indeed everyone thanks for the suggestions and welcomes, I always knew that mountainbikers were very friendly, very knowledgable and just a bit bonkers! But seriously there are some suggestions we can try out so thanks again I will post any results good or bad.

Having had a brief skim of the messages i am not sure that what you are describing is carpel tunnel syndrome. The symptoms tend to be more numbness and pins and needles type symptoms, rather than severe pain. Obviously diagnosis involves a clinical examination and if it is CTS it can be surgically released. If it was me i would be asking for further investigation and treatment options. Hope it gets sorted.

Hi,
My wife had this complaint especially after driving for a while after wearing a splint for a while she decided to take the plunge and had surgery in and out in a day, she wasn't allowed to drive for ten weeks but everything seems fine now

Yes - I have been dealing with a number of employees who have developed CTS. This has been through prolonged exposure to workplace vibration.

CTS is a cumaltive disorder which will require some form of medical intervention, as is some cases it can be treated.

For more info look at the Health and Safety Executive website under the subject of vibration, most of the cases withbe workplace settings but it will give you better understanding of the possible controls.

Regards

PB
