Views on this/past years SX trail I and II and next years rather Sexy looking M5 alloy framed SX Trail? I am thinking of getting one of the two at the end of this year! It will be in addition to, not instead of my regular trail bike (to have a bit of fast action, going bigger fun on) I am fully aware of the extra heft of a bigger (around 35lb-ish, and I use the term 'ish' loosely) but just wondering If any of you guys, Thats MBR staffers and Forum regulars/not so regulars have any experience of Owning/ riding one, Good or Bad?

Cheers Proph

Hi Proph , not owned one mate but was looking at getting one a few months ago - lovely looking beast, should be SAF to ride mate and you will love the extra travel and bulk as it adds shedloads of confidence when tackling big drops. The weight isn't really an issue as you know that it won't cut the trail like a carbon hardtail but you know you will have a hell of a lot more fun on it !!, you've seen my trusty steed at the minute and shes not exactly Kylie Minogue in proportions but she can still climb pretty well and is no couch potato downhill !!! . More weight = more effort = increased fitness on your cannondale.... I used to ride a Coyote DH3 with trailpimps, Super Monster T's and 2.75 Slime filled tyres that tipped the scales at a very svelt 47.25 lbs clean and I used to ride that around the chase and peaks - even carried it to the top of Mt Snowdon once.. I say go for it mate then I can have a test ride.. LOL

Cheers VT1

There was a guy in Scotland at Innerleithen who had a custom built one and he even offered me a go but I chickened out as I didn't want to be rude (stupid really as he had offered me a go! Bet he just wanted a go on mine to know if a lefty rode as weird as they look )

His was an awesome piece of kit Bomber 66 RC2 ATA forks XTR groupset, Brooks saddle, just to mention a few things I noticed. And he had caught and passed us on a pretty gruelling climb/ descent.

If I get one yes you are welcome to try!

We took one to the MegaAvalanche - there's going to be a review in next month's issue. Coil shocks are the way to go. Way more traction, way more control and way more comfort. Although I would upgrade the rear shock to a ti spring to save some weight.
The geometry is great too. The wheelbase is really long so if feels super stable at speed, but most of that length is in the front end so it's still pretty easy to manual.
If you've got the money ready to go, I'd snap one up. The spec's awesome too, nothing you need to change immediately (apart from the tyres, the ones that come specced are really slow rolling, get some Maxxis DH tyres on there - we rode 60a Minions front and rear and they roll really well for the wieght)
Not seen the 09 one in the flesh but to me it looks a bit soft - more of a "park" bike than a real hardcore trail bike. Probably rides the same though, if not better. Who knows... We'll have to wait and see.

Cheers Andy, they are a great looking piece of kit and with 6 and a bit up front and 7 out back, it should be able to take anything I can throw at it!

Won't be till the end of the year before I can even attempt to try to buy one as the Missus WILL NOT ALLOW!!! so the decision as to whether its a this or next years bike may be made for me if all last years are already snapped up?

Well done in the Mega by the way sounds like a pretty mad ride! the video footage (helmet cam) from the last one just looks plain crazy

Just one comment to make to Andy's post, if you've got the money then go for the MkII. I rode the MkII (until it got nicked, that is!), which has a Fox fork, at the reader weekend in Les Gets this year and it was terrific. However, a reader was riding the MkI and had a lot of problems with the Marzocchi fork - it seized up repeatedly, but when it was stripped down there seemed to be nothing wrong with it. Was rebuilt and the same thing promptly happened.

Awesome bike though, I loved it.

Sizes are strange however. I'm 6.1 and was riding a small! It was a little cramped, but only just - anyone up to 5.11 should certainly get it in small.

We're doing a bike test on it shortly. For the October edition I think, so if you can hang on that long you'll get to hear Muldoon's wisdom!

Cheers JamieD, it won't be until Nov/Dec at the earliest so its no problem to wait whatsoever and will be more beneficial the more reviews I get.
