Any recommendations on a good value hardtail for my son who has outgrown his DiamondBack.
At the rate he's growing it may only last a couple of years before he needs something bigger again, so I don't really want to spend a lot of money.
That said I'm not interested in buying a halfords special that he'll probably bend in 20 minutes meaning I'll have to fork out again.
I've considered upgrading my vintage Raleigh Ravine for him, but I figured that I could get something half decent for what it would cost me in upgrades.
Any advice greatly appreciated

hi mate, i did get my son a spesh rockhopper but it was £600 and you say you dont wana spend to much.
as i always say look at older models 2006/07 bikes will have mega sales on them so you may get a bloody good bike for not a lot of money especially as your son is probably a x-small size and its these sizes that are left to the big sales. http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/
try these, i found a good few here but its hard to help without knowing what your spending, ebay is always a good place to find a good bike.

You're right, Six hundred quid probably is a bit over my budget.
Been looking at the Spesh Hardrocks, £250 or thereabouts is probably a bit more realistic.
Trouble is that he's only a couple of inches shorter than me (okay, fair enough, I am a shortarse), but still probably puts him out of the XS range and maybe out of the biggest bargains when it comes to 07 or 06 bikes.
Might have been able to spend more, but the Mrs wants a new bike too - it's gonna be an expensive year

Have you looked at Edinburgh Bike Copops own brand - just bought my kid a Revolution Cuillin XC - its actually a pretty decent bike for the money.
