New Frame advise
      #3836 - 01/07/2008 06:44

Hi Guys, first post so be nice....

I've recently started to treat my bik a little rougher than in recent years so am looking to upgrade my frame for something a little tougher that the ancient one I have.
I'm 6'3" and 16st.
I'm really looking for hardtail that is capable of most stuff that also won't break the bank. Wanting to spend about £300 or so, but can spend a little more for the right frame. I saw the Kinesis Maxlight Pha5e but they only make it up to an 18" frame.... I really need bigger than that.

Have you guys got any suggestions or me to investigate?

Check out Rock Lobster and Merlin frames at Merlin

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/

I bought the B52 from them a while ago and it's bloody brilliant IMHO. Shame it's not available anymore but they do have other highly rated frames in stock and usually a few they're knocking out cheap.

OK I'l definatley check those out, the other though I had was a Cove Hand job or an identiti Mr hyde.. the reviews for both look good, although at teh cove is an XC frame I'm not sure it would cope with my mass (but i head heard to the contrary)... the main issue with my current it that it flexes a bit round the bottom bracket when I'm putting my weight through the pedal...

Oh and juicy fruits... much better than starburst thats for sure...

How about trying to find a Cove Stiffee frame? it'll do almost anything! I've got a Kona Hoss which is very similar design and it's a very versatile bike which can be built up either as a tank or a lightweight beastie. These two would be good for bigger riders too, i'm 6'2" and feel perfectly at home on the Hoss.

Another one that might be worth looking at is the DMR switchback which would make a good trail bike too albeit a little heavier.

All of them are pretty bomb proof and could be made up into decent UK hardtail trail bikes.

Hope that's helpful.

I don't hammer my bike all that hard but I'm not light at 16st. I ride a little bit more than just XC, but I don't thrash downhill or anything.

I had been thinking of picking up the Hoss frame only, but the guy in my LBS thought I'd be able to get a bit more for my money (although I have to say I've seen the frame really cheap).
The Stiffee is a bit more than I can afford to spend (I have to get a few more bits that I can't transfer over from my current bike), I'll definatley check out the switchback.

The more I read about the cove Handjob the more I was being drawn towards it, it's really at the top of my budget though. Keep any more suggestions comming guys. I'd rather have too much info than not enough!
