Bike Rack
      #3685 - 26/06/2008 12:56

Am looking at getting a bike rack to travel a bit with my bike. I was looking at getting one to go onto my roof bars (either Halfords or Thule), but realised that because I drive a 4x4 it might take super power arms to get the bike on the roof?.

Has anybody out there got a 4x4 and how do you transport your bikes? Thoughts and experiences appreciated.

You could always go for one of those hydraulic bike lifts - bloody expensive though. For those sort of prices you could have a tow bar mounted rack.

Don't have a 4x4 myself, use Atera carriers atop a volvo. Estate Cars FTW!!

Had the same issue Elmer.

Sold my Jeep Grand Cherokee and got a VW Passat Estate. Much easier on the arms and you don't need a step ladder!

(oh, kinder on the motion lotion too!)

If this ain't an option what about a towbar fitting or rear door mounted rack. Thule are the kiddies at anything rack related unles it's a Bones.

I've seen some clever racks that mount on the rear mounted spare wheel you see on many 4X4s - would that be a solution?
Watching in car parks round the Forest of Dean it always strikes me that fetching bikes of the tops of tall vehicles is a real pain - step ladders look the only solution, and of course you dont want to be driving under any low hanging branches .

Have a pal with a 4X4 just bought roof bar rails from halfords and found he could not reach the **** bike.

The solution was to go back into halfords to buy a plastic tool box, place to store tools and kit(if he had any!) and a convienient step to reach the bike with.

Hi Elmer , had a 4x4 myself a couple of years ago and used one of these witter towbar racks , really quick to fit/take off and super sturdy ( mine held 3 full downhill bikes without any problems - min 130lbs clean) also very good price and well made (ebay £52ish delivered).

Thanks all for your opinions. Will have to do some serious thinking now and, 1.look into a rack that fits onto the tow bar, and, 2. Practise lifting my bike onto the roof of the Shogun to see if that is a realistic way of transporting the bike.

Hi FX,

Can't you just cut out the middle man and put the bikes IN the van?
