Not a happy man today. I leant my bike up last night to unlock garage. As soon as I turned my back the damn thing toppled over. Got the bike out this morning and found that it was not only superficial damage, but that the rear mechanism is bent and twisted. Managed to pull it out a bit to ride to the station for my commute, but not convinced that it is doing the chain any good. If I try to engage the largest gear there is a nasty sound of moving spokes hitting a stationary object and I can't get the smallest gear. Question - can I get a new 7-speed derailleur from a site like Wiggle (or other recommended site from this forum) and do a straight replacement, or do I need new chain, front and rear mech at the same time?

Well, before you spend any cash, I had the same thing with my Enduro - the mech hitting the spokes. If, as in my case, it is just the mech mounting that is bent, heat it up (I used a hairdryer) and *gently* bend it back. Mine worked a treat after this. Give it a go before you part with any cash... Some of the guys on the forum work with metal, they may be able to tell you a safer way to bend it.

Hairdryer? Could not imagine that being hot enough. Dread to think what the condition of your scalp is??? Could use my kitchen blow torch, but that could melt the alloy.

hi steve, i can only think that it was the hanger that ElPonko bent back to shape, christ that must be a sh#t hot hairdryer you have there ponk and an iron scalp. if you have twisted the mech then just twist it back. looking form the back of the bike the mech should be straight up and down, not angled towards or away from the bike. make sure its nice and horizontal, after that adjust the mech to pick up all the gears. i dont think it needs replacing, just sorting. hey ponk, i posted the tyres this morning, the wife kept forgetting, woman!! they should be with you tomoro or friday latest.

Had a better look at it this evening. Looks like bizarrely, the frame where the mech attaches has been bent in towards the wheel. I did have a big lever with me, but no good. Never mind, been looking for an excuse to get a new machine - now the question is HT, FS, or dread to say it, cyclocross (as I am tempted to try to commute in to London on the roads from St Albans). Current bike cost £50 5 years ago so it owes me nothing. Advertised in local Post Office window, and when I went to look it was brand new in the box. I like the look of the Kona Kikapu Deluxe on reduced price on Wiggle at the moment - any thoughts?

hello again. your question was hardtail or full susser then i thought you kinda answered it your self.
however, i have just checked the kona out and i was supprised to see it is a full n.
not sure about the bike, had no experience with it and kona are a bit of a unknown to me.
looks like your ready to spend a bit so look around, have a scout about this forum you will see plenty other people getting help with the same problem. also put up a post asking the question about a bike for your money.
if your a regular mbr reader then get out the earlier issues and have a look, i am sumising your looking for a deal on an older model.best way i reakon.

i tell ya, that's a mighty hairdryer i own... like a jet engine with afterburner. it was the hanger that was bent. i doubt it actually did any good giving it a nice blow dry - just made me feel better about bending the mech back. will tell the goods in boys to keep a look out for the tyres, greeneye. will mail when arrived. commute from st albans into town?? jeez, are the trains that crowded now a days? that's one hell of a journey before work. mind you, it's a great excuse to buy a top notch machine.

Done it once before. Killed me on the way home - you get to Elstree and it suddenly gets hilly. I had not been adding energy on the way, so bonked. Got home and my wife said I looked grey.
Boys was that a day! Cycled in, locked bike up on an official pavement lock-up. Looked out of the window at about 3pm - no bike! Went down and found a sticker on the locking point from Snow Hill police. Someone was spotted by an off-duty officer applying cutters to the lock, chased down and nicked. Got the bike back on the same afternoon. Needless to say I now have an Abus lock that no-one is getting through.
The old bike and I have been through a lot - it's an old friend!
