Double Crown shocks, damn!
      #35463 - 02/07/2009 18:26

Hey guys

Im half way done with building my Stinky. Put my Super T forks on, rear wheel, and front wheel. And im pretty surprised how, erm, tall the front end is lol! the handlebars go up to my bellybutton. I guess ive been riding a dirtjump bike for about 8 years so the differance is very noticable.
Anyway, more to the point, the steerer tube seems slightly on the short side. My Stem only slots onto it halfway! damn:( Seems strong and like it would hold up but im not sure. Maybe i should find a shorter stem.

Try a lower stack headset 1st, assuming you don't have any heaset pacers under the stem or top crown/yolk (if you do, remove them and try it). It'll make up for the extra spacing the top yolk requires over a single crown fork. The stock headset on a Stinky is a Chisel branded version of the FSA Pig that has deep cups and a tall stack height.
Measure from the toprace to the top of the headtube, and from the crownrace to bottom of the headtube. Add these measurements together to get you stack height.
Then measure from the top of the stem to the top of the steerer and deduct 2mm for preload spacing.
Hit www.canecreek.com and look for a headset with a lower stack height which is stem to steerer less 2mm lower than your current headset.

if you can't find one, get a new crown & steerer from Windwave via your local Marzocchi dealer.
Don't ride it as it is, it'll probably fail as you land your biggest drop ever.

On 2nd thoughts, your fork may have 4 holes in the top yolk that may be threaded or not. If they are threaded you can get a "direct mount" stem and simply bolt it to the top yolk and use spacers to get the 2mm preload clearance on the steerer.
if they're not threaded, you can get a Marzocchi bolt on stem (the threads are in the stem and the fixing bolts go in from underneath.
These options may be more expensive than a new lower headset, but they'll be cheaper than a crown & steerer.
