Hey guys
Just wondering wether you would reccommend me taking my frame and headset to the LBS to have them fit it. I tried to tap it in very lightly but it would not budge, so im thinking off to the LBS it is, I dont wanna risk breaking my frame. Just annoying cause dont wanna spend the money having someone else do it. Unless you have any suggestions?

I just renewed my headset. i left the existing races in place and changed the bearings. However the correct tools arent that expensive. If I had to do this in the future I'd buy the tools and do it myself!
My LBS were gonna charge £25, but had to book in 3 weeks in advance. I recon the money spent far out weighs the hassel of not having your bike!

Wow man, £25 and 3 weeks, just to put a headset on, what were they thinking? I actualy just rang my local bike shop, they said it would cost about £7-10 and they would do it there and then in about 10 minutes. I just asked them to put the 2 cones on the top and bottom, not fit the entire headset/forks that is. I dont wanna risk bashing the ends in and snapping the frame or anything so i guess ill just go to the LBS.

My local bike shop in Brentwood wanted around £30 and would've kept me waiting for a few weeks as well, but I didn't have the tools. So I went to a shop in the high street selling toys and kids' bikes. The bloke there changed the fork for me overnight and charged me £15. He actually enjoyed working on something different for a change too!

The expensive tool is the headset press, the removal tool is only about £20.
BUT...
Does all of the above include facing and reaming the headset tube? If you get into that then the proper tool is hundreds. Admittedly you only really need to have it done once but there are very few bikes that are faced and reemed from new.

Just got my local to put the top and bottom cones in for me earlier, took him about 3 minutes and charged me £8. Excellent! Fair enough the frame had already had a headset in it before and it was just the cones i wanted fitting which i already had from my old bike, so i guess thats why it was cheap and quick:)
