Hayes Sole missing component - replacement ?
      #35134 - 29/06/2009 12:03

Hi there,

New to forum and very new to tackling hydraulic disc systems. So forgive me for the basic and perhaps incorrect description of missing bit.

My problem is the back (?) of my hayes sole rear brake housing unit (part that straddles brake disc) has gone missing somehow.

It is circular, approx size of pound coin, and seems to screw into the housing unit which has a magnet in it. This magnet I believe holds the brake pad back.

So I am missing this circular piece and I cannot find a replacement part or an equivalent part from another model which would be compatable.

Any ideas , sites to buy this part, comparable parts to replace this one.

Thanks in advance and I hope I was some way clear :-)

Try Chainreaction. They have recently aquired Hotlines, the UK distributor for Hayes.
The part you're looking for is the static pad adjuster cap. And you've probably lost the grub screw from the caliper that secures it once it's adjusted, or it wouldn't have come out.
I'm not sure this is available as a spare for those brakes, so you might have trouble finding one.
But view it as an opportunity to upgrade the brake to dual piston more powerful brake that you don't need to adjust for pad wear if this is the case.

Thanks for that, I have tried chainreaction but they did not have that part. I would upgrade the brakes but this is basically now a commuter bike as I have recently got (given - how lucky am I) a Haro full suspension frame for offroad with Avid Juicy set-up.. so I am basically being a cheap arse and not wanting to pile any more money into this bike and rather would buy the components for the new one.

Again thanks I hoped that this part would be easier to get ( I had to find a bleed plug last time when it popped out - not a good design methinks )

Afraid not. That's for the El Camino / Stroker Ace mono block type caliper. It wouldn't fit, and has a different function from the part you need.
I've got some old SO1E brakes in the workshop, but I'll have to confirm they're not going to be used for anything else before i can strip one down and send you the part.
ring 01639850011, and i'll let you know once i've spoken to the owner.

Thanks very much for the offer, but since I posted last time I decided to search eBay for a second hand pair of Hayes Sole brakes and found one for about 26 euros from the USA.

So I will either use that or just replace the part as it is a front brake system whereas the missing part on my bike is a rear ... I am assuming the part is the same for both.

Again I really appreciate the feedback and help on this

Regards

Eoin
