Hi,
My chain broke last weekend, luckily only about a mile from the end of Coed LLandegla. Bought a KMC 9-speed chain from Wiggle as it seemed to have really good reviews. Fitted it but it was jumping gears in almost all gears, was a bit better when on the largest front sprocket.
Started to think all the usual things like worn cassette, adjustments for derailleur with no luck. BTW old chain worked spot on before.
Decided to put the old chain back on with a new link and problem has gone away.
The KMC chain has an X pattern on its sides, a bit like on the HG cassette? Not sure if that's relevant but was thinking perhapos in combination with the HG cassette it was simply too keen to change gears?
Anyone come accross this before-the desciption online and on the box says that the KMC chain is compatible with all 9 speed transmissions.
Cheers.

I would have thought it'd be compatible. What made you decide it's not a worn cassette? Did you change it for a new one? It could be that your chainrings are also worn, which is possibly why it's a bit better in the largest chainring. How long was your chain (the one you snapped) on there for?

Interesting question, and also an opportunity for me to show off that I've invested in a copy of Sutherlands
There can be compatabillity issues with some drive trains and chains, for example a 7/8 speed Interglide chain can be used to replace a 7/8 speed Hyperglide but not vice versa.
As you're talking about a KMC 9 speed chain, X9, Z9900, Z9200, Z9000 then it has a width of 6.6mm similarly the Shimano 9 speeds have the same 6.6mm width. I can't see any particular reason why the same chain width wouldn't work so I'll DITTO nick, did you measure the old chains stretch before you binned it?

Hi-chain has been on for about 18 months and I do on average about 15 miles a week XC MTBing. Not sure how to measure the chain for stretch but side-to-side with the new chain it looks exactly the same length.
Have put the old chain back on for now, with a new link until I sort out and just been around Llandegla without any probs at all.
Cassette doesn't look worn ie. the teeth all look good.

Sounds like you need a new cassette and possibly middle chainring.

Take your current chain off the bike and lay it out next to your new one. It'll be longer over a given amount of links because it's worn about 1%. This means that it's worn the teeth on your cassette even though it doesn't look worn. Rings have more teeth and tend not to wear at such a high rate, but it's best to replace the middle ring at least, as it'll just accelerate wear on your new chain & cassette if you use the old one, and it'll cost you more in the long run.

Invest in one of these..

Use it regularly. It will save you loads on replacing worn cassettes and chainrings!!!
Keep your chain well lubed and change it when necessary!!

Cheers all-Just ordered new cassette and chainring, on closer inspection the chainring does actually look worn, but taken all advice and got cassette as well, hope to be good as new by weekend.
