Hi, im bidding on some forks on ebay and the stancions have a small mark/scratch on them. Will this cause any problems, will oil leak when the fork is compressed over the scratch. Cheers. RS revelation by the way.

yeah i think marks on the stantions is a pretty serious problem, dirt will get in the scratch and get under the seal when compressed. wait for more advice but personaly i would stear clear.

I guess it depends on the damage, but worth keeping an eye on.
Does it feel rough and will it damage the seals, is it so deep that oil could get past it?
SirQ any thoughts??

I've heard of people filling scratches on stanchions with superglue and sanding it smooth with *some* success, but the only way to sort it properly is to replace them. The price should reflect this.

Spring loaded or not, the basic problem will be that sh1t3 will probably get into them, reducing their life/operation.
Grease and oil as you know will attract all that grit so unless they are giving them away, or you could be doing with the hassle, I would avoid, why do you think they are selling them in the first place!

Scratches on stanchions, well they're not going to improve things are they?
Unless you want to fork out (fork out... geddit?) on new stanchions then I'd 'steer' (huh huh!) clear.

I don't think I'd buy forks which are already scratched, but I saw this awhile ago and thought I'd bookmark it incase I have any problems in the future:

Well, as I said I wouldn't buy a pair of forks planning to do this, but could save you some money if you damage your own forks in the future.

I've just realised they say they're coil, but they can't be if they're 454s. If you go for them I'd advice finding out which is true first.

Hi Nick, they certainly can be. The difference between 426 and 454 is one has an alloy steerer and is lighter by a few hundred grams.
I have 454's coils and they are pretty flipping good. Not light but a very compedant fork. from switching to coils from an air shock, I really have to say that Ive foud then to be that much plusher than air forks (I used to have 05 TALAS RLC) that I wouldn't be going back to them for a good while. The price for them is about as cheap as you will find.... money well spent inmy book.

Cheers fred. I did wonder. I was going to go for these when I was thinking about building a hardtail, I've never heard anything bad about them. However I decided to go down the full suss route instead and have just ordered a Spesh stumpjumper about an hour ago, get to pick it up next week.

I've got the biggest grin on my face evertime I think about it. Have changed bars, pedal and tyres on it. Now just have the fun of setting the shock and forks before I can get out and enjoy it.
