im looking to buy a road bike!
      #34939 - 27/06/2009 11:13

i know i know, its a road bike, but, but! theres not too many off roads local to me where ever i go i have to drive which with the rising petrol costs is becoming very expensive, so im looking to get a road bike to help with my stamina and to just get out on my bike more.

so where do i start? i dont want to spend too much, i just want a road bike, whats the kind of price range i should be looking at. i know in mtb you wont get anything half decent for anything less than £500.

and please dont hjack my thread haha you all know who you are!

thanks for the replys.

ye i was thinking that tango, but my idea was to save the wear and tear on my off road bike. and plus the thing with having 2 wheel sets doesn't it wear the drivetrain unevenly?

That is true KC

you could either keep you drive chain well within it's limits or alternatively yu could move the cassette across

having said that the rest of the bike would wear so maybe a less expensive training bike would be a good idea

My road bike is a Carrera Vituoso which I paid £260 fro from halfords. It has lasted me a whole year without any mechanical problems, not even a puncture. I use it for my 9mile commute to work three times a week. The only changes Ive made are flipping the stem over and clipin pedals. Its been a bargin and should last me a life time.

I now have a roadbike , but until recently have always used 2 sets of wheels on my hardtail . I still have one thats 10 yrs old and I have never experienced any problems with uneven wear . The front chainrings wore out first probably because the spare wheels have thier own cassette .

As for the roadbike a ,boardman pro hybrid, its great and faster than the MTB on slicks but if i were to go touring I would take the MTB because the gearing is better suited to loads and hills and mainly its more comfy to ride all day, because the suspension forks soak up rough roads and fatter slicks are more compliant than skinny road tyres .
