I've been looking to upgrade my suspension forks for a little while now, and due to one thing and another my budget has shrunk. I currently run the stock 70mm-100mm Manitou Splice Super that came with my Giant XTC SX. There's nothing really wrong with them, just general wear and tear, but they are going to need a service soon and I hear that Manitou forks are not easy to service by yourself.
I was going for something lighter, but with my reduced budget the most important thing for me is to get something that is reliable, easy to service when needed but otherwise fit-and-forget. I won't have another chance for a good while to change my forks, so I really don't want to screw up my upgrade choice.
Reba's have slipped out of my range, and Recon's seem to be hard to come by. It's a different matter with the Tora's though. They seem to be fitted to a lot of bikes these days - my best mate is running the coil sprung 302's with U-Turn - so that has to be for a reason. Hopefully all good... After some searching I have found some brand new top spec 100mm 2007 Tora 318 Solo Air forks elsewhere on the interweb (http://corporate.marketplaceadvisor.channeladvisor.com/storefrontprofiles/processfeed.aspx?sfid=101713&i=68975206&mpid=86&dfid=1), which I think are a bargain for the spec as the only difference I can see with these and the higher end forks is that steel is used instead of alloy so they are heavier.
Would this be a good choice of upgrade - or are the newer Tora's better? My mate raves about how good his Tora's are, and while his 302's weigh in more than my current Manitou's the 318's I'm looking at here are slightly lighter.
As an afterthought, what happened to Answer Manitou? I never see thier new forks fitted to bikes these days

The 07 solo airs where my first proper fork upgrade, going from some crappy RST Gila 4's. You're right about the weight as I was surprised that they weren't any lighter than the ones I was replacing but the plushness, oh wow ! Amazing, made stuff rideable and so I can highly reccomend them if you're on a budget. I've still got them on my Lobster and for fit and forget easily serviceable forks you won't go wrong. Another one to consider is the Marzocchi MX Pro Remote LO Air 100/120mm Travel Fork they beat the Tora's in a recent-ish MBR review and I've not heard anything bad about them, cheapest I've seen them is here http://www.cyclesportsuk.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=6244
