PSP22 is supposed to be the best energy drink.
Take a few bananananananananas (sorry tough to know when to stop spelling it), they are high in potassium and help to stop cramp, plus they are a good slow burning fuel source. Things like flapjack/cereal bars are good, the sugars give you a quick boost, the oats agian act a little more long term. It's also worth taking a protein source (I take Kabanos) to stop muscle degradation if you are going out for a really long time.

I 2nd the powerbar (caramel and peanut -mmm!) use SIS energy dring (orange or lemon & lime)always in a 750ml bottle and plenty of water in my camelback. I also carry a tube of ZYM in my pack to make up an extra bottle if on a longer ride. Always try to have a good meal (including cereal, bread and jam/honey) an hour or so before setting out. Bananananananananas are great for taking on a ride - and you dont feel guilty throwing the skin into the bushes My problem is volume, so a bana - piece of fruit! and a couple of energy bars and plenty of liquid is what I always take with me. As for post ride.... now that's a totally different matter!!!

I still stand by the old favourite snickers (marathon) bar
Way cheaper than these fancy power bars etc, and do pretty much the same job. If look at some figures
Power Bar Energize per 100g:
Carbs: 75.6g Protien: 10.8g Calories: 378 Cost: £1.36 each
Snickers per 100g:
Carbs: 54.5g Protien: 9.4g Calories: 511 Cost: 50p (if that)

Start the day before with upping your carbs with pasta meals etc, then start the day with a big breakfast, oats, porridge etc. An hour or so before you ride use your energy drink to give your body as much fuel as you can ( like filling your car with petrol before a long journey ).During the ride i use watered down lucozade sport (about 50/50 ), and jam butties. I also fill my pockets with fig rolls, wine gums and haribos. The most important thing to remember is that your body won't store all the carbs you consume if you are dehydrated, so drink as much fluid as you can for a few days before and during the ride.

Little and often is the best way rather than getting 3/4 of the way round till you're fooked and then try and recover using various potions etc. Mrs SLB used to be terrible for this!
If you're going to splash the cash on proper energy products I'd suggest getting some Torq (or similar) powdered drink stuff. This way you're keeping your carb levels topped up as you go along and just use the chocolate/sandwiches/haribo etc for a physical and mental boost.

i know what your saying, but for a start choco isnt great for your energy levels because of the saturates in it
trust me the power bars are amazing, i've had snikers when i've been on the bike and they are no where near as good as the powerbars them powerbars are like rocket fuel there brilliant!

I'm with rob on this one, I'll stick to snickers . Especially since I normally have a constant metering of energy drink.
Craig, you are right about saturated taking longer to be broken down into useable energy but that is fats, and not carbs (both similar molecules granted)... If you keep topping off your carbs then you shouldn't really need so much in the way of good fats..

Diet is important. I do some trailquests and, trying to keep a good pace throughout the day is important, so I have faced some of the same issues for these.
Carbs are important. So pasta up the night before. For breakfast, have cerial. This is a good food for slow release energy. The other thing that you are going to need is to do is make sure that you don't cramp up. You need a source of potasium. Thats why so many of the old school riders will chomp bananas.
You need a carbs drink. Water alone will not do the job. You need a quick way of replacing the energy that you are using and liquids are the best. I tend to Ride with SIS Go (Lemon and Lime or Tropical are my faves). Unless you are dragging a water bowser behind you, you are stuck with whats in your bottles and your Hydration pack. So it is worth weighing out the amount of powder that you need to refil your pack, pouring this powder into a zip type freezer bag and popping this in your back pocket. That way, if you need to refil, you are not stuck with water.
Energy bars. You want things with plenty of fruit and natural sugars, like honey. You can make your own flapjack to achieve this. However, I like the SIS Go bars. However, another company has come up with Pinacolada bars and I am sort of getting adicted to these.
Jelly Babies. These must be Bassets or it won't work. Quick, easy, get you up the next hill, sugar. Yum. Freezer bag again, this time with jelly babies.
Go Jells. Pop these regularly, perhaps every couple of hours. I also like the Cafien based. Many people will use these before a race. However, I use them for a cafien kick in the second half of the ride.
The trick is not to have a big meal. Eat the odd mouthful often and it will keep you going. All of this fueling is fighting a losing battle. You have two hours of energy built into your legs. You have about half hour in your internals. After that you hit the wall. To avoid this you fuel. Many tour riders will munch mars bars in seconds to keep themselves fueled. But the truth is that you will use more during the ride than you can put it. All you are doing is ensuring that you don't hit the wall during your ride.
When you stop riding your body will act like a spong for about 2 hrs. You will metabolise anything you put into your body 4 x faster than normal. Many people say that you should protien at this stage. Not a bad idea, but ballance this with carb replacement. Fats and salts are good. So order a bacon pasta with your bear and crisps. (I sometimes leave out the pasta bit and opt for a bacon butty, but the beer and crisps is a constant).
By refueling within this 2 hr window, it means that your overnight recovery should be smoother than not. This means that you won't ache so much the next day and will be able to ride, after a cerial breakfast, the next day.
Luck

High 5 2:1 fructose powder mixed with water ( berry is nice.. IMO)
bananas are ok, if you don't mind being chased through the forest by a gaggle of screaming chimps... although I accept that you don't all take your kids riding with you like I do, so chimp-infestation may not be a hot issue!
Malt Loaf is like seat belts, clunk clik every trip - these babies DO SAVE LIVES ! keep your camelbak for water - esp if eating anything solid... DOUBLE ESP if eating high density energy bars, such as GO bars... your body needs a lot of water in the stomach in order to properly (and efficiently) digest any solids, it will not release water for digestion though if it is needed for temperature regulation due to on-going exhertion.
therefore if you are going like the clappers and sweating like the proverbial fat kid at the pick n mix counter, drink even more if you intend to eat enroute. it also gives you a clean source of water for washing out your wounds when you come a cropper. i've tried cleaning out wounds with sticky sugary snake oil potions and it does nothing for you.
the best advice is already on here - avoid excess alcohol a few days before a big ride, hydrate throughout, starting a couple of days before, plan a diet you like, otherwise you won't eat it no matter how "appropriate" it is, and don,t forget...
this is supposed to be fun, not a F***kin' home economics experiment !

I had a look at this stuff on Friday thought it looked ok but they wanted £4 for postage. Just went to LBS and go some Torq stuff instead.

I'm sure the more nutritionally focused on here will raise an eyebrow or two, but for days when I'll going for a decent ride, I always start with a good old fry up.
It doesn't take much to convince me to tuck into a Full English, but it was recommended by a marathon runner and is apparently quite common among the non-competitive long-distance runners. I should add that when I was doing the Gorrick races, this did not work... it is more for all-day riding.
Then flapjacks and malt loaf as already suggested when out on the trail.
Pretty sure the proper nutritional stuff does work better, but I've never had a problem... as long as the flapjacks are in the hydration pack and not the glovebox...

Yep, full english to start off then I carry a combination of cereal bars (nutri-grain, etc), jam butties and Lucozade Gel (until my free supply runs out).
I drink tescos own label isotonic stuff (cherry or tropical), no idea if it's any good I just like the taste.
