Although starting from scratch can be useful (I did this on my son's mtb) sometimes you can salvage matters. (I did this on my daughter's atb)

So what exactly is the issue? Is it front? Rear? Both?

Secret squirrel mechanic tip!
Haven't watched the vids so sorry if it's not that secret.
Separate the issue of indexing and alignment and disconnect the cables first. Get the alignment sorted with the H&L screws by using your hand to push the mechs over then attach the cables and move on to indexing.

gears always are a bit of with new bikes and will for the next couples of weeks its all to do with cable stretch and everything bedding in, so dont worrie about it, in the end it will be a peice of cake setting the gears up

youtubes videos are a big help imo

Craig is right flannigan, fresh cables take awhile to settle in, that compounded with you not hving the benefit of a little practice will make it a bit of a nightmare to get absolutely spot on.
If it's your first go, just go slowly, making small adjustments and decide if you think it's better or worse after the change. if its worse just undo the last change you made and you are then back to how you were previously.

It took a good few goes to get it all running smoothly with making it worse happening a lot before I made it better. Each time you come back to adjusting your deraileurs it will get easier.

yeah, when the cables strech a bit its just a case of twiddling the barrel adjuster a little...
remember.. only a little at a time.

dude, Ho's must come cheap in your neck of the woods...

Flannigan, when you are getting frustrated just sit down for a cuppa and calm a little then come back to it. It's a sure way to make stuff worse or break something if you allow yourself to more and more frustrated.

If you have a workstand then you will find that gear adjustments etc get a fair bit easier. They can be quite pricey though.

Nope I don't, just speaking from experience! I've stripped threads and wrose in anger before.. it leaves you in a whole heap more trouble in the long run...
