Scotland Road Trip - Where to go?
      #34622 - 22/06/2009 22:58

Hi

I am going on a road trip to Scotland in early July. Travelling from the SW of England. The plan is to start at the Seven Stanes near Dumfries for 1 day then head to Peebles for two days. That leaves me two days - what should I do with them (I would prefer to stick to trail centres)?
Cheers
Davie

Hi Davie,

Try Dumfries for 2 or 3 days there is a lot of riding there, Kirroughtree Black could take a day in it's self, Dalbeatie, Maybie and Ae are about a half day each.

Peebles for 2 days may be enough, lots of trail centers as you probably already know. Have a good trip and welcome to Scotland.

I've just got back from doing this exact trip! We started last Friday at Mabie, then rode Dalbeattie and then Kirroughtree. All great trails and all a bit different. We stayed at a nice campsite in Dalbeattie. Then we moved up to Peebles and rode at Glentress for a day. Wow. That's all I can say. Plus I hired a Spicy 516 for the day which knocks the socks off anything else I've ridden (which admittedly isn't that much...). We were also going to hit Innerleithen, but a last minute injury curbed that idea. You could easily spend 2 days at Glentress though. I'd happily ride Spooky Woods all day! We did our trip over 5 days and took it easy, but you could easily cram it in to less.

Have a great trip.

Lee

Yes I know this is posted after your planed departure, but the info might be useful for others later on.

Can't over-recommend Drumlanrig Castle - just north of Dumfries. Great singletrack, no groomed motorway, just loads of roots and good condition trails mainly under tree cover so not too subject to Scottish summer weather. And a tea shop/ showers/ bike-wash at the end, drop in at Riks Bike Shed in the castle grounds and catch up with the trail builder (Rik) for any comments.
