What's the deal with these? Are they a good option for XC/All mountain? I do tend to use the granny ring when riding steep, slow uphill sections. But I'm thinking I might be able to get away with just using the inner ring of a dual ring set-up. What do people think about the idea of dual rings upfront?

i think dual rings are a pretty good idea, however, there are occasions when gravity just doesn't accelerate you enough, and i personally find my self using the big ring a lot of the time. but if you dont need it, its just extra weight.

So you loose the big ring? I thought it was the granny ring that was out?

With RB on that one,
You won't be able to get up to top speed on the way down, anyway the chain in the big ring act as a sort of bash guard, so the best of both worlds if you keep it as is.

I don't suppose there's anything to stop you taking the granny ring off but the weight saving will be something akin to the mud on your bottom bracket, more usually it's the larger ring which then gets replaced with an even heavier bash guard so there's no real weight saving to be had. In my opinion, for a mere mortal like myself, the loss of the extra gears from the drive train doesn't warrant the marginal loss in weight.

And what about gear selection? The front mech shifter has 3 positions for standard set ups. So presumably you'd need a 2 position shifter/front mech?
I'm not really concerned about the weight saving aspect of a dual ring set-up. I'm just intriqued by the idea & possibly trying something new for my new build.

Nope, afaik you just use the same mech and shifters, then set the limit screws so that it will only change between the two rings that are left.

Fred's right you set the limit screw so that when you go to move the derailleur it won't go further than the 2 settings. I set up a customers bike like this a while ago, it was good result as before it was trying to move the chain onto the bash guard.

Cool. So no need for specialist kit for this set-up.
There doesn't seem to be much choice out there unless you go for 2 rings & a bash guard. All I've found on Chain Reaction are these;

You can but special ones or just run a normal spider with only 2 rings. There's tons of options on CRC from FSA etc etc http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Categories.aspx?CategoryID=576 If you got for the crank arms and mix and match chain rings don't be put off by confusing BCD figures, that's bolt circle diameter. There's only really 2 to worry about 110mm or 135mm just make sure they match and you might need new chain ring bolts. Oh, and that you have the same number of bolt holes as arms on the crank
Arms like these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=37029 Visit the chainring page for chainrings http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Categories.aspx?CategoryID=575
