GT Avalanche headset
      #34192 - 18/06/2009 10:26

I've got a GT Avalanche that needs a new headset and can't work out what I need, integrated / semi integrated

The steerer is 1 1/8" dia, the internal diameter of the frame is 44mm and the external dia of the frame is 50mm.

Can anyone point me in the right direction.

TIA

It's a Tange Seike (sp?) aka Cane Creek. Apart from that I don't know whether it is integrated etc. But at least you can possibly chase the manufacturer for info on what they supply to GT, or ask the question directly of GT. I was looking when replacing fork and could not work it out. In the end I replaced the star nut only with a Hope HedDoctor.

Is there a clue in that the manufacturer website says that the head tube is zero stack? Other people can follow this comment up with their better understanding.

I had the same problem a while back, really frustrating and didn't end up with the right one in the end.

The best thing to do is whip one end out and take it with you to the bike shop or measure it using vernier calipers and get one off t'internet.
Dot Bikes are pretty good and if you ring them up they should be able to help. http://www.dotbike.com/

The old headset is a Cane Creek ZST2. I have found the spec and dimensions of it, but can't find anyone that sells the unit.

After a bit of Googling, I have found that a WTB Inner Peace fits, just need to find a supplier.

Just to close this thread (for those of you reading it in the future )

An FSA Orbit ZS - 3 Headset 1.1/8inch will fit an '08 Gt Avalanche (44mm internal & 50mm external dia). The stack height is about 4mm(ish) higher that the Cane Creek unit mentioned above.

That means that a Cane Creek ZS2, ZS3, and ZS6 will fit beause they're all made by the same company.
TH Industries. The higher number denotes the higher quality of bearing used, and that is reflected in the price.
