Any good XC routes near Bodmin, Cornwall
      #34028 - 17/06/2009 08:40

Hiya I am heading off on holiday to Bodmin and wondered if anyone knows any good XC routes around there? I know the Camel Trail goes from there but looking for something a bit more interesting than a flat trail! Any decent loops in the area would be much appreciated, anything from short loops up to 30 or 40 miles would be great.
Thanks if you can help!

Hi Giant Biker WTTF. Cardinham woods, on the eastern outskirts of bodmin, it's quite good riding there especially if you explore off the beaten track.

If you can get yourself an OS map of bodmin moor there is plenty of scope for routes there. There is one I have done from the carpark at the western end of minions, It's not overly long and I'll try to explain:

Exit carpark and turn right up road. After about 1.5km turn up track on left and climb up to chimneys. Then locate lane that goes down to Darite (it will all be clear on a map hopefully). A little way down the road the road bends right with a track going straight on, take the track (be careful there is some massive rock steps down here, not hard to walk over though if needs be). At bottom of track turn left along road, then take next left at crossroads. Climb up through quarry keeping to track and it will take past more chimneys, then back down to main road at GR: 280 696, where there is a carpark. Turn left on road, then immediately left again onto track (you should be able to pick up this track without going on the road). Follow track around north side of Caradon Hill. When you get to fallen down bridge crossing main road (it's about 3-4km till you get there) go to the left and drop down the bank onto the road. Turn left along road, through Minions and carpark will be on your right.

It's not really technical or long but will get you out for an hour or so. There is also scope to increase this rid, have a look on a map at the Tremar area (just south of Darite). Hope you have a good holiday.

Have just been informed about Dunmere woods, just NW of bodmin, by the Borough Arms on the camel trail. Have never been the myself but have been told it's good.
