The Killer Midge
      #33894 - 15/06/2009 21:35

My Friend and I have just spent the weekend riding a few of the 7Stanes Red & Blacks; whilst riding in Ae my mates Avids chucked a pad so we stopped to fit some new ones. It only took 10 minutes but in that time I was bitten 92 times by midgies (yes I counted them!!).

Has anyone got any proven protection and remedies that I can try out next time as I'm feeling prety miserable at the moment

Thanks

Jonny

smoke golden virginia , It was about the only time I was ever encouraged to roll a smoke to keep the critters at bay . Don't smoke these days so keep putting off a trip to scotland .

They were talking about midge repellant today on the radio and said the only thing that is proved to work is DEET repellant , horrible stuff

I didn't get bitten at night because we were burning heather(never liked her)and pine needles but I think I'd struggle on the downhill sections with a cig in my hand. I tried the DEET stuff from boots but they ate me anyway...must have sweated it off I guess.

secretly spray your mates back with lynx or any other smelly then sit back and enjoy while every midge in scotland flocks for him while you sitting pretty.

No proven protection or remedies, you've just gotta take em out 1 by 1, it's a long process but if everybody work's together we'll get there in the end.
Keep up the good fight

Marmite - eat it, not smear it!! It's meant to make you smell horrible to the little buggers as you sweat it out of your pores.

eating liquorice (if you can stomach it) works for me,avon skin so soft does not work, smoking only works for the shoulders up,and it's not so good just before a big climb

Think the blue works better than the pink and makes you smell less like a fruit!!!!

Yeah Kev

It's great stuff, as you see a midge coming you through a bottle of the stuff at it.

It scares them off
