Crossmax SL Wheels
      #33721 - 14/06/2009 20:56

I'm on my 3rd pair of Crossmax SLs and every pair I've had starts to make a strange "tinkling" noise after a few months riding. The noise comes from the spoke/hub interface and is only noticeable when grinding slowly up really steep climbs. Is this cos the spokes need tightening or is there some other cure for this annoying noise?

I would think it's because you're spokes need tightening. I've only ever had tinging noises coming from my wheels, when the spokes are newly tightened and they are settling back down. Somebody else might be able to give you more advice though.

Same as Nick, after I have been correcting a ding or when brand new.

They use a proprietry Zircal aluminium spoke in a straight pull setup at the hub which has a ball-end interface.
If grit gets into the hub/ spoke interface, it can get noisy.
Particularly as these wheels feature the ISO PULSE system develpoped from the KSYRIUM road wheels which uses a radial lacing on the driveside and crossings on the non drive with a FTS (force transfer system) across the hub to allow energy from the more efficient parts of the pedal stroke to flex the driveside spokes and store energy for release during the inefficient parts of the pedal stroke to boost performance.
The spokes are continuously moving durng use and the dirt simply advertises this fact.
They are race wheels that need high maintenance to perform correctly, and should be cleaned and serviced regularly.
HTH.
