I've just been trying to remove the disks from my hope bubs. Most of the nuts came out okay, with a bit of encouragement from a rubber mallet. But several of them are nut budging. Furthermore they look as if they have been overtightened & the hex socket has become worn. When I insert the hex key it's not a snug fit like the nuts that came out more easily. What are my options here? I'm thinking I might have to carefully drill the nuts out.
The second problem concerns the cassette. I was going to post with a picture of it to ask what tool/s I need to remove it. But whilst I was working on the disk on the other side of the wheel the cassette just fell off! Several small blocks of metal & 3 springs also popped out. The part that the cassette fits onto (I don't know what that part is called) is still inside the cassette & has come away from the wheel leaving just a thin spindle. What just happened there?! It doesn't seem right that it just fell off. I've had some work down on the wheel in the past so I'm thinking some yo-yo just didn't put things back together properly.

Is the free hub/freewheel a shimano one, if so I have actually had this happen to me years ago, it's had it, will req replacement, sorry.
The blocks of metal are called the pawls and this is with the spings makes the clicking noise when you freewheel, you will need a chainwhip and cassette removal tool for taking the cassette off in future, right now a casstte removal tool will suffice, a bench vice and an old chain if you have both can do the same job but is easier to get the tool.

as for the rotor bolts, if the head has had it i usually get a torx driver and hammer it into the bolt head, some people like to cut a groove so they can get a flat head screw driver in.

Your discs should be attached to the hubs with a Torx 25 bolt, not hex bolts, and how did you go about using a rubber mallet to get them to undo???

Cheers for replies guys. As ever hugely informative & helpful. I thought the freewheel had had it! As I said in my post I've had trouble with that before & it's been in for repair at least twice. Both times I got on the bike, went to pedal & the cranks just span round freely & I didn't go anywhere!!
Thanks for the heads up on the blog, rb2000. I thought about starting one when I got the idea of rebuilding the Isis. I'm quite new to bike maintenance so it's going to be an interesting process for me. Hopefully at the end of it all I'll no a hell of a lot more about bikes & how to work on them.

These are definitely hex bolts. I stuck an allen key in the hole & gave it a wack with a rubber mallet to get it moving. Job done ....... except on 3 of the damn things!! Actually there is a fourth bolt I cannot undo but it requires a different size allen key than any of the ones I have. I've ordered a new full set from Chain Reaction.

Is this the tool I need to lockring removal? (actually this one seems pretty obvious but I thought I'd best check anyway). I've already bought a chain whip.

Cheers, rb.
Didn't mention before that the lockring is loose i.e. it's wobbling about in between the cassette!
Now just need to work out how to get those bolts out of the disk hub! I'm a bit concerned that Queusalot seems to think I'm using the wrong tool. Could mean I might need to buy another new tool, which is great. Bring on those tools
By the way I added to the blog today & gave you guys a mention for all your help Much obliged

They all look the same to me apart from 1, which is totally different. I reckon the guys in the shop who fitted my Hope disk brakes must have been a bolt short!

i can only think that all but one are dome/button heads and the other is a cap head. the cap head would need a size bigger allen key.
try a hammer and small chissel and tap them lose. becareful.

Had to be done. I've received a shed load of help from this forum. I'd be stuck without it to be honest.
Can I ask also, do you see the Google ad area on the right of the page under 'about me'? Just checked in work & I don't see it there. Strange I could see it okay from home.

nah its fine as long as your ultra careful, your just trying to shock the bolt into breaking lose then you should be able to use the allen key.
lord knows what happened to the blue boxes here
