I just has my first proper ride on a full suss today. Picked up a Cannondale rush 4 demo bike from LBS this morning and took it on a 20km ride. I can't go back to a hardtail now - I flew on the thing. First off, with the fox pro pedal lever I managed to clean a climb I can't do on my hardtail (due to loose rocks and loss of traction), in one. Then it just took rock gardens and drops in it's stride.
I've never spent so little time braking on a ride. The bike just seemed to float over everything. Bring on tomorrow for more riding, then I won't be able to wait for next weekend when I'm demoing a stumpy.
I've got the biggest grin ever on my face this evening.

There's a time and a place for a HT. But it's not offroad...

And it depends on the HT and the rider.

Cheers. I've always thought full sussers were less efficient then HTs, it's only because I was chatting to the mechanic at LBS about building a new HT and he advised me to demo one of full sussers before making the committment that I decided to give them a go. I'm so glad I did.
I'm demoing the comp, I prefer the elite but am not sure LBS has a demo elite. Will have to ask though.

I think it takes a lot more technique to ride a HT off road, and everyone shoudl learn to ride one before going to full suss, but the full suss is so much more fun and a hell of a lot faster.

Hey it's not winding me up, I'll never buy another HT, I don't see the point any more.

I have one specced up on paper at the mo. I fancy somthing a bit simpler that doesn't have 10 pivots to wear out. Want to keep the Lap in as good condition as possible!
Merlin MALT 1 frame (resprayed black) Reba Team's (20mm Maxle Lite) Deore running gear Pro-II wheels.
Would cost me £500 to do, as I'd just need the frame & forks...

Spesh are bringing out an aluminium Epic next year, it's not gonna be much heavier than this years carbon-only models but it's gonna be a lot cheaper. A short travel, super light, full suss will be replacing HT for me.

f/s may well be the way forward but i will give full marks to anyone who still gets out on a h/t.
good on you cg, i built a scott h/t a few years back but had to sell for various reasons but it was a thrill to ride as it offered a completely different ride for good and bad reasons plus it was my own build.
dam i miss the old girl.

Last time I was out on a HT I was sick of having my arse snapped off at the slightest little bump.
I know that is because I've become sloppy after riding the susser everywhere, but I'm not worried about that, as I said earlier I'll not be bothering with another HT.

Anyone who's ridden with me will tell you that my bikes don't get an easy time... There just seems to be very little point in wearing out the pivots on a £3k bike by riding it on the road, etc. That's what a HT would be used for, but also built hard enough to be hammered around smoother trail centres.

I can see your point about wearing parts out, that's why I've been looking at getting a road bike, I want to keep my mtb for pleasure purposes only.

i had a merlin malt 3 and it was great, wish i could have afforded to keep it, like cg said it would make sense to use a cheaper bike with less moving bits on the road.
(must get my old diamond back ascent from my neighbours shed as a road tool)
you are right nick, i think all riders should spend a couple of years on a hard tail as it does teach you a lot about riding technique.
a full suss would forgive in certain circumstances where a HT would throw you off
