Avid Juicy Three
      #3302 - 18/06/2008 17:04

I have just bought £120 worth of avid juicy three for my dirt jump bike. The front one is working fine, but after some light jumping and heavy braking, the lever for the rear brake pulls all the way back to the handlebar, like it isn't connected. After a few pumps it seems to be fine again though, until the next bout of heavy braking. They come bled and cut, and the hose length was perfect, so I didn't tamper. Please help

well im not sure about the avids but if you have to pump the brake it could be there is air in the system so they may need bleeding.
im just guessing though.

Yep,

You're describing air in your hydraulic system. Fluids do not compress under pressure but air does and so absorbs the piston travel in your brake lever movement.
By pumping the brakes you're actually compressing the air to the point that it is the easier to move the caliper out than compress the air any further.
Make sense?

So the good news is we know what it is that's the problem.

The bad news is that Avid juiceys are a right palaver to bleed and you need a special kit , or so I'm told.

Unless you're a bit handy and want to know how I'd approach Lady Q's J3's on her new Myka, let me know and I'll type it up, if not head of to your LBS with a few bob in your back pocket.

This is uncanny as I was just about to start a new thread about this very problem before I saw this one. I have just purchased a set of Juicy Carbons from Merlin and, again, they come fully "cut and prepared". I like my brakes to "bite" as soon as I pull the lever but, as the original poster says, the levers are almost touching the grips with full braking. For me this is with both front and back brakes AND with the pad adjustment dially thing set fully to "pad in". Surely Merlin wouldn't have sent two poorly bled brakes? Is there any other adjustment to be made or is bleeding the only option?

This made my first trip to Golspie interesting today. What a trail though! Long way for most but well worth it if you get the chance. More practise required for me as it was the first black run I've had a go on (glad I run flat pedals...).

Apologies for rambling...
