Creaking Cranks
      #3299 - 18/06/2008 17:01

Hi people

Got on my bike today for a quick ride to the shops and my cranks started making a really bad creaking sound.

It only happens when I put load on the cranks, it's not the pedals as i've checked them, sounds like the BB.

Anyone had this before?

Cheers Mikey

Shimano Alivio, Think they are Square taper by looking at them. The bike is a Giant XTC 4.5, the cranks and BB were changed by Giant due to failure of the old ones (Truvativ Isoflow)

My mate thinks if I take the cranks off and lube them a bit it might help.

The bike has been sitting for a few days but was fine last night when out for a test ride

Mikey,

Basically your mates kind of right there.

If you've got the right crank extractor tool I'd spin off both sides, slap a bit of copper grease on each side of the square taper - not much mind, just a small smear, and then tighten everything back up again, nice and tight - tighter than that... go on a bit more....

Having said that, when you've got everything of the BB just give the shaft a spin, it shouldn't be grindy or graunchy at all but smooth and feel a bit viscous to turn. if it's anything but nice the problem is with you BB as well.

Thanks for your help Sir, I'll go and get a crank tool from a shop somewhere. Sounds like I'm gonna need it from time to time. Going to Laggan Wolftracks on Sat so need it fixed by then.

Am I right in thinking It's not doing any damage just more annoying than anything?

Cheers again

Mikey

I'd check it out sooner rather than later.

If the crank is loose on the shaft then yes you stand the chance of damaging the crank arm/s by having it wear away against the shaft.

If all is tight and it's a BB issue then it's certainly not going to get any better onits own.

Halfords sell reasonably priced basic tools like this

Thanks for the help guys. Got a crank tool on the way to Laggan and took the cranks off in the car park. The BB was a wee bit loose so tightened that up and put some copper slip on the square drive. 2 runs of the red trail later and all is well.

Thanks again.

Mikey
