Bottom bracket size and front mech compatability ????
      #3149 - 16/06/2008 12:58

I'm currently replacing my holdsworth steel frame with a donated aluminium carrera fury frame.
The carrera came with shimano stx rc rear front mech, it also had a 110.5 bottom bracket.
My donor crank uses a 122 ish bottom bracket (biopace crank) if i were to put my old bottom bracket and crank on my new frame would my front mech still work after adjustment or am i just better buying a new crankset ?

Hi there Celtic,

Can you not use the BB that came with your new frame?

If not I'd just get a new BB that's the same size as the new frames old one, they're not too expensive and cheaper than a whole new crankset.

What you suggest could be done but you'll avoid a lot of fiddling about getting things to line up if you have the right size, and it might not line up correctly anyway.

Hey Sir

Tried the old crank on the new BB but it catches on the chainstay so it looks like it needs the longer BB - Bummer...

Tempted to drop the old BB into the new frame but not sure what hassle i would have with the setup of the front mech, or even if it would work as the old biopace crank was from an 18 speed where im building the new bike around a 24 speed setup.

Looks like a new crank is the easier option, dont suppose anyone can recommend a decent crank for under £40 or any thoughts on truvativ vs shimano as there are some cheap truvativ cranks on ebay ?

John

Interesting dilemna , had a set of the LX cranks that Greeneye has listed on his post - very good cranks and BB only problem is that the pedal arms do start to lose their colour quickly (shouldn't be a problem if you run clipless though) , currently running a set Truvativ Howitzer cranks and BB - superb stuff and relatively cheap if you shop around - very stiff and strong as they are aimed at the XC/Freeride scene. Hard to really say which to go for as both make good chainsets/BB's - its all down to the same two considerations...... looks and money . You'll still get a decent set whichever you choose.

hi doc, you touched on something there about the paint rubbing off on shimano crank arms. how bad is that.
i have a freind who was running full xtr but his crank arms were worn after not very long so they looked rubbish.
my race face evolve arms look as good now as they did 3 or 4 years ago.
have shimano sorted this problem?
i think its a big problem that seems to have been overlooked for so long.

Worn paint & stone chips = battle scars

Worn through the black paint on the race face evolves and IMHO they look great, it looks like a bike that gets ridden!

Does shimano allow this as a secret sign to those who know what to look for?
